The Staffordshire Police Cadets are appealing for donations after the Covid-19 pandemic put a stop to all charity fundraising events.
The Staffordshire Police Cadet scheme is a service for young people across Staffordshire aged between 13 and 17-years-old, which strengthens links between the police and young people, develops leadership skills, improves confidence and provides a sense of civic pride.
A big part of being a cadet is volunteering their time to assist in many different roles at community events. These events often result in generous donations, which helps to expand the scheme. Sadly, due to the Coronavirus pandemic all local events have been cancelled meaning no income into the cadet charity.
Up to 90% of their fundraising income could be lost this year – they normally manage to raise over £20k a year, when so far this year they have only been able to raise £1k. The cadet scheme is funded entirely by charitable donations as they receive no government funding.
Sue Arnold said: ‘As Deputy Commissioner I’ve been delighted to oversee an initiative which is about engaging young people, some from challenging backgrounds, through a vibrant and positive programme.
‘However, the Coronavirus pandemic has hit the charity hard with donations 90% below what we received last year. We understand this has been a difficult year for everyone and so many people are suffering financially, but if you do have the means to make a donation, big or small, it would be greatly appreciated. The scheme is run by a charity with no government funding, so we need you now more than ever before.
‘Over time I have seen the cadets become more confident and outgoing with many benefiting academically and socially, as well as reconnecting with local policing teams and communities. All money raised will help us to reach more young people so everyone can have the opportunity to become a cadet.’
