More than 16,000 people have signed up to Staffordshire’s Smart Alert service, according to figures released ahead of the Police and Crime Panel meeting.
Matthew Ellis, Staffordshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, launched the service in 2016.
Mr Ellis will tell the PCP meeting, which is to be held at Staffordshire County Buildings on April 23, the downloadable app has become a popular community safety tool.
Statistics up to February 2018 show some 10,000 app downloads, with more than 6000 email registrations.
Staffordshire Smart Alert provides real time crime and community safety information to businesses and communities across the county either through a downloadable app or via email through the Smart Alert website, staffordshiresmartalert.uk
Mr Ellis said: ‘Developing the Staffordshire Smart Alert is all about helping the public to help the police to turn up the pressure on criminals and tackling crime. I also wanted it to be more appealing to younger people to get involved with.
‘It adds to the great work neighbourhood watch groups do and as Smart Alert continues to grow, the quick time warnings and information requests from police will help more and more to deter and tackle crime
‘The mobile app is easily downloaded to any smartphone and the faster we grow the 10,000 current users, the more it will help to tackle crime and warn communities about issues in their immediate area.’
The system has the ability to send an alert to signed-up residents and businesses within a 3km radius when an incident or safety issue arises.
