Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Matthew Ellis has asked the Chief Constable to provide an operational evaluation into Staffordshire Police’s ‘drink drive’ campaign that ran over Christmas and New Year.
Mr Ellis said: “The campaign by Staffordshire Police to reduce the number of drink drivers over Christmas has now finished and the debate it created on all sides was helpful in raising the issue of drink driving and the fact that it is becoming more and more anti- social across Staffordshire communities and the country.
“I now want to understand whether it was successful, the impact it had and how effectively it was carried out by the police. The Chief Constable will provide that report to me, along with specific areas that I’m keen to understand more about, in the next two weeks and I look forward to receiving it.”
The evaluation that is currently been scoped will look at the operational procedures by Staffordshire Police and also the advice provided by Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) who instigated the national drink drive campaign. Staffordshire was one of twelve forces to take part in the campaign.
He added: “It’s absolutely right that Staffordshire Police should be proactively trying to stop things from happening before they do. That is a key priority for me. It is also right that as part of the role of PCC I understand how effectively it was done and any learning the police might take into account in the future.”
