PCC encouraging Staffordshire and Stoke nominations for national volunteers’ award

Matthew Ellis, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Staffordshire, is calling on people to show their support for police volunteers by nominating the best in the county and city for a national award.

Each year the Home Office hosts the Lord Ferrers Awards to acknowledge the valuable contribution of volunteers to policing. This year, for the first time, the public have the opportunity to put the names of extraordinary volunteers forward.

Police Cadets, Special Constables and Police Support Volunteers can be nominated for individual and team categories in the Lord Ferrers Awards 2016.

Mr Ellis said: “From the fantastic work around the Staffordshire Police Cadets and the great work of Special Constables, there are many volunteers already making a difference and contributing to Staffordshire Police.

“I’m grateful to all the volunteers who are making a real difference and a great contribution.

“This year, the national Lord Ferrers Awards is open to nominations from the public and I really hope the people of Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent take the time to nominate some of our Cadets, Special Constables and Police Support Volunteers for these awards.”

Police Support Volunteers carry out roles which provide additional support such as helping at events and open days, independent support for vulnerable people, engaging and working with young people through the Staffordshire Police Cadet programme, and assisting with translation and communication with members of the community.

The Lord Ferrers Awards, previously called the Special Constable and Police Support Volunteer Awards, are open to a wide range of policing volunteers and recognise those who have demonstrated a sustained and significant contribution to policing in their local communities.

The awards categories include team awards and individual awards for Police Support Volunteers, individual and team awards for Police Cadets, and individual and team awards for Special Constables. There is also a Leadership Award for Special Constables and an

Employer Supported Policing Award which is open to organisations that support their employees to volunteer in policing. The award recognises the contribution of employers and includes those accredited under the Community Safety Accreditation Scheme.

The Police Support Volunteer roles in Staffordshire are: Vehicle Fleet Support Volunteer, Community Engagement Support Volunteer, Community Language Volunteer,

Appropriate Adult Volunteer and Cadet Assistant Volunteer.
