Burton Albion’s commitment to its local community has been highlighted and praised by Staffordshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Matthew Ellis.

Mr Ellis singled out the club’s work with young people when he attended a Burton Albion football match and met with partners who have been heavily involved in his new Space project.

Space was originally an activities scheme led by police in Staffordshire during the 80’s and 90’s aimed at engaging with young people. The new version of Space, coordinated by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, has been refreshed and updated but has a similar aim of involving 11 to 17-year-olds.

The activities during the summer school holidays are being planned and delivered through a collaboration of public and voluntary organisations, including the Police.

Mr Ellis has pledged up to £140,000 to fund activities with an aim to increase skills, improve health and general wellbeing by creating opportunities for young people to engage positively. Activities include sporting events, arts and crafts and music production.

The Space scheme, which is running now and will finish on Friday 4 September, is delivering a wide range of events and activities across East Staffordshire and the surrounding areas.

Mr Ellis said: “I would like to thank Burton Albion for all of their help and exceptional support in delivering Space. We wouldn’t have the list of activities we do in Burton and beyond if it wasn’t for the support from providers like the Brewers.

“I was delighted to be invited to the Burton Albion FC game to discuss all of the amazing community work they do, including their support in Space.

“My hope is that Space 2015 is just the start and I see the scheme expanding over coming years.”
