Community project funded to stop sexual exploitation

A Stoke-on-Trent project to tackle the sexual exploitation of women has been awarded £14,831 from the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Proceeds of Crime Fund.

The Proceeds of Crime Fund is made up of assets and money seized from criminals in Staffordshire. This has allowed Brighter Futures to continue offering support services via the women’s project.

The project provides support, advice and information to women who are engaged in sex work or are at risk of sexual exploitation. The women’s project offers weekly support sessions across Stoke-on-Trent to ensure that women have access to contraception, personal safety information and sexual health advice and testing.

The service offers a safe and supportive environment allowing women to speak with dedicated and knowledgeable staff who are fully trained to provide up to date information on benefits

Last year the service supported 169 women in the area, an increase of 16 per cent on the previous year.

Mr Ellis said: “I am determined that 100 per cent of funding that comes back to Staffordshire Police from proceeds of crime seizures is going directly to local communities.

“I was delighted to see the great work that is being carried out by Brighter Futures. The passion the staff had in supporting women across Stoke-on-Trent was a pleasure to see and I am thrilled I have been able to help this worthwhile organisation.”

Chief Executive of Brighter Futures, Helena Evans said: “Brighter Futures are delighted to be the recipients of ongoing financial support from the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner.

“This funding will enable us to continue to provide vital support services for people experiencing sexual exploitation. We look forward to working with Mr Ellis in the future to continue to strengthen these links and support vulnerable adults and young people in the City of Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire.”
