A Longton based wrestling project has been awarded £3,000 from the Police and Crime Commissioners, Matthew Ellis’ People Power Fund.
The Sutherland Project will hold three weekly wrestling sessions for young people aged from ten years-old with a professional trainer in attendance each week.
This project will provide opportunities for young people to get involved in a positive activity whilst improving their health and fitness through exercise.
Mr Ellis said: “I really enjoyed my time with the Sutherland project, it’s fantastic to see the work that’s being done here and I’m sure the club will prove to be extremely popular with young people.
“Projects like this are great for engaging young local people, giving them a chance to keep active whilst teaching them a new skill.”
John Geary, project organiser said: “Our wrestling initiative will enable young people to channel their energy into a highly disciplined sport. This is an excellent way of venting frustrations or boredom and will give a lot of our community’s youth the opportunity to build their confidence whilst encouraging a competitive spirit in them.
“They will be able to train and compete against professional wrestlers. The whole community can benefit from this initiative as it will help youngsters improve their health and wellbeing whilst appreciating the needs of others; it will keep them off the streets and give them a purpose in life.”
The club is holding an open day on Monday 25th August to officially launch the project.
The next round of funding began on Friday 1 August and will close on Sunday 14 September. To find out more visit www.staffordshire-pcc.gov.uk/fund
