A Newcastle-under-Lyme community project for young children and their families has received a boost from the Police and Crime Commissioner’s People Power Fund.
As part of his commitment to local communities, Commissioner Matthew Ellis is providing £500,000 in 2014/15 through the People Power Fund in the form of grants of between £100 and £3,000 to generate community safety solutions.
Chesterton Locality Action Partnership has been awarded £2,988 to provide children, aged up to seven and their families with positive activities in the area. Activities at the play scheme include sports, dancing and parachute games.
The project will provide positive links with the community with the aim to reduce anti-social behaviour in the future.
Mr Ellis said: “The Commissioner’s People Power Fund puts half a million pounds back into local communities. “I have significantly increased the funding that local areas in Staffordshire have to make their communities safer.
“Projects like this are essential. By providing children with an activity they might not have tried before, it can give a real sense of community spirit.”
The project’s organiser Lilian Barker MBE, Chair of Chesterton Community Forum, said: “The funding that we have received from the People Power Fund will enable us to deliver a project in an outdoor space. Exercise through play is a good way of interacting with children whilst helping to improve their health and social skills.”
Grants of between £100 and £3,000, are available through the next round of the Commissioners People Power Fund.
The next round of funding opens on 1 August and closes on the 14 September.
