Staffordshire Commissioner for Police, Fire and Rescue and Crime, Matthew Ellis is urging people to act responsibly following Government announcements last night that social gatherings of more than six people will be banned in England from Monday (14 September).
The announcement comes as a result of recent rises in the number of cases of Covid-19.
Staffordshire Commissioner Matthew Ellis said:
‘The Government’s announcement last night underlines the seriousness of the situation we now find ourselves in, with the number of Covid-19 cases on the rise again.
‘Looking forward, if we want any hope of being able to enjoy the upcoming Christmas period, we all, as a community, need to take action now.
‘While most people understand the importance of these measures, some people are choosing to act as if the crisis is already over, which it is absolutely not.
‘Most people across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent are digging deep and following the guidelines to protect themselves and their communities, but it is vital that those who don’t think it matters realise it really, really does. We have a responsibility to ourselves, but a huge responsibility to others as well.
‘Facemasks must be worn wherever appropriate, and people must follow guidelines about hand-washing, social distancing and gathering in groups. We need to continue to work together to fight Covid-19 and save lives.’
