Staffordshire Commissioner welcomes new report into work of Staffordshire fire service

The Staffordshire Commissioner’s Office has welcomed the findings of today’s report by HM Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS), which praises the work of Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service (FRS) in keeping people safe and secure.

Staffordshire FRS was found to be good at providing an effective service to the public, including preventing fires and other risks, protecting the public through fire regulation, and responding to fires and other emergencies and national risks.

HMICFRS also commended the service for looking after its people, judging it to be ‘outstanding’ at promoting the right values and culture through getting the right people with the right skills, managing performance and developing leaders and ensuring fairness and promoting diversity.

The service was also praised for its efficiency, making the best use of resources and making its services affordable.

Staffordshire Commissioner for Police, Fire and Rescue and Crime, Matthew Ellis said: ‘Over the last year or so, since taking on the governance of fire and rescue here, it’s been clear to me that the organisation is working well.

‘They have adapted well over recent years to changes in society, which have meant fewer fires, and have taken the opportunity to focus on preventing harm in the first place through education and adaptions to homes.

‘The joint working with Staffordshire Police is also gaining pace, including sharing some buildings and administrative functions and stronger cooperation around missing people.

‘The assessment by inspectors rightly shows that our fire service here is performing well and is actively adapting to a changing environment and new challenges.’

Overall, the report commended Staffordshire FRS for its performance, with HMICFRS ‘confident it is well equipped for this to continue’.
