Elford cadets donation

Cadets receive £1,000 cash boost

Staffordshire’s Police Cadets have received a welcome donation of £1,000 from the Elford Scarecrow Festival, in thanks for their support of the event.

The cadets scheme aims to strengthen links between the police and young people and promote good citizenship. This donation will help to expand the scheme, so that more young people across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent have the chance to become a cadet.

There are now 10 successful units across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent, with demand for more in the future.

The Staffordshire Police Cadets – a uniformed and disciplined service for Staffordshire youngsters between 13 and 17 years old – were introduced in 2013 by Staffordshire Police, Fire and Rescue and Crime Commissioner, Matthew Ellis.

Deputy Staffordshire Commissioner Sue Arnold, who oversees the cadets on behalf of the Commissioner, said: “The Staffordshire Police Cadet scheme is all about encouraging young people – some from challenging backgrounds – through a positive and vibrant programme, with reconnecting youngsters with the police service at its heart.

“I am immensely grateful to the Elford Scarecrow Festival for their donation, which will help to expand the cadet scheme and allow even more young people to learn leadership skills, gain confidence and develop a sense of enhanced civic pride.”

David Hidderley, Vice Chairman of the Elford Scarecrow Festival, added: “The Staffordshire Police Cadets were fantastic and we couldn’t have done without them – especially as the festival enjoyed record attendances this year. I’d like to thank all the young people for their invaluable efforts during the festival.

“The cadet scheme really is a worthy cause, benefiting everyone in the local community, and we are delighted to be able to support them with a donation.”

The cadet programme is run by a charity, so donations from businesses or individuals are vital in ensuring the scheme is sustainable for the long term.
