Sporting sessions going from strength to strength

An organisation in Cannock is providing sporting activities for young people thanks to a grant from the Police and Crime Commissioner’s People Power Fund.

Achieving Goalz and Dreams is aiming to reduce anti-social behaviour across Cannock by encouraging young people to attend and take part in a range of different sporting activities.

Young people have the opportunity to attend sessions and take part in activities including indoor and outdoor circuit training, boxercise, basketball, and more.

They were also awarded funding to establish a street pentathlon programme which includes bike riding, circuit and weight training and football.

Achieving Goalz and Dreams were awarded £6,000 across the two projects.

Police and Crime Commissioner for Staffordshire, Matthew Ellis, said:

‘Achieving Goalz and Dreams are doing a fantastic job of engaging with young people in Cannock and encouraging them to keep active and take part in group activities. Bal and his team are doing superb work which is having a positive impact in the area.

‘The best ideas to reduce crime, social harm and anti-social behaviour often come from communities affected by those issues. That’s why, since 2013 I’ve increased the funding provided for simple things that make local areas safer and better to live in.

‘At the heart of developing the Commissioner’s People Power Fund and Proceeds of Crime Fund was listening to those who are closest to the problem and supporting their ideas with funding to try and fix things. I’m continuing this because the principle has been so successful over the last few years.

‘Tackling the issues, building community spirit and often reducing repeat demand on policing means providing that financial help at the most local level is really cost effective.’

Bal Sing, founder of Achieving Goalz and Dreams, added:

‘The funding has helped us to put the activities on and engage with the young people to keep them off the streets. It’s been brilliant, everyone who engages with us enjoys it.

‘We have got lots of volunteers now and they always look forward to the activities we put on such as boxing, football matches and cricket.’
