A charity that works with young people across Stoke-on-Trent have kicked off a programme of activities after being awarded a grant from the Police and Crime Commissioner’s People Power Fund.

Staffordshire Clubs for Young People have been awarded funding to provide activities for youngsters after school when parents may not have finished work leaving them vulnerable to becoming involved in anti-social behaviour.

They also received funding to provide a range of positive activities during all school half terms and holidays. The range of activities on offer will include fishing, climbing, mountain biking and more.

The club is aiming to reduce anti-social behaviour and improve the personal and communication skills of the youngsters involved while teaching respect for communities and the environment.

Staffordshire Clubs for Young People has been awarded £6,000 across the two projects to provide after school and school holiday activities.

Police and Crime Commissioner for Staffordshire, Matthew Ellis, said:

‘The best ideas to reduce crime, social harm and anti-social behaviour often come from communities affected by those issues. That’s why, since 2013 I’ve increased the funding provided for simple things that make local areas safer and better to live in.

‘Tackling the issues, building community spirit and often reducing repeat demand on policing means providing that financial help at the most local level is really cost effective.

‘Staffordshire Clubs for Young People is doing a fantastic job of working with youngsters in Stoke-on-Trent to provide activities to keep them engaged and active. I am pleased to hear about, and see first-hand, the work they are doing in helping youngsters make the right choices in life.’

Ian Atherton, Development Officer for Staffordshire Clubs for Young People, added:

‘The People Power Funding we received is enabling young people to get involved in positive diversionary activities that promote health and well-being and learning new skills, as well as addressing anti-social behaviour.

‘Any youth groups that would like to take part in these free sessions can get in touch with us on 07415866544.’

The Current round of People Power Funding closes on Friday 14th April. To find out more information and to apply visit the website www.staffordshire-pcc.gov.uk/fund
