A Staffordshire Police Cadet from the Codsall Unit used his initiative by providing assistance to Staffordshire Police at a recent road traffic accident.
Police Cadet Michael Drew assisted PC Dean and PC Gilbert at the scene of a traffic collision in Great Wyrley. Unbeknown to the officers who had blocked off the road, Michael Drew who lives nearby, had come out to assist in re-directing the traffic.
Michael was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for his actions during a recent cadet meeting, in the presence of Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Arnold, Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire and Inspector Giles Parsons, LPT Commander for South Staffordshire. As a thank you for his actions Michael was offered the opportunity to accompany the Central Motorway Policing Group on a shift.
Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner for Staffordshire Sue Arnold said: “I am incredibly proud of Michael and how he responded to this situation and the assistance he gave to the two officers at the scene.
“Michael has shown initiative, confidence, motivation and a strong willingness to help others. These skills are an integral part of the Cadet Service and he deserves the recognition he receives.”
Inspector Giles Parsons, Local Policing Commander for South Staffordshire, added: “Officers at the scene were incredibly grateful for Michael’s help and assistance. He was awarded the Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of this. However, we would always ask that people consider their own safety before getting involved in directing traffic at incidents such as these.”
The Police Cadets work towards several nationally recognised qualifications including team-working and citizenship. Many of the Cadets have found that through the scheme they are becoming not only more confident and outgoing, but that they are also benefiting both socially and academically, all while helping to build links between the police and young people.
Businesses are invited to become Patrons or Sponsors to help fund uniforms and equipment for the Cadets. In return for becoming a Patron, businesses’ contributions are recognised through publicity, a framed certificate and other opportunities.
